New Study on Home Food Delivery Services Highlights Need for Consumer Food Safety Knowledge

By Lisa Kennedy

Home food delivery services are getting more and more popular.  They include whole meal kits as well as meat, poultry, game and seafood products.  I recently bought a subscription for my parents for a meal kit service.  They loved getting the fresh ingredients complete with everything they needed to for a home cooked meal.  It’s a great idea, but a new study from the Rutgers University and Tennessee State University shows possible food safety problems and the need for both regulatory standards and consumer food safety knowledge.

Through consumer interviews and order testing, researchers found that while most consumers believed that the mail order products were safe, there was a high percentage of those products that were not properly refrigerated during the delivery process or once at the delivery site.  Unstable temperatures can lead to bacteria growth and foodborne illness. The study also found that very few products included safe food handling messages. Consumers can protect themselves by requiring a signature upon delivery and by knowing proper food safety practices and cooking temperature.  Click to find out more about how to BeFoodSafe
